Shadow Heroes

Shadow Heroes is a charity that sets out to that use key concepts in translation as a way of exploring not only the linguistic but also the social, cultural, historical and political processes that shape a text and its translation. Led by professional translators, workshops are designed to boost shy students’ linguistic confidence or stretch talented students further.

Sophie Lewis has been translating fiction and other literature from French since graduating from Oxford University in 2004. Her translations include works by Stendhal, Jules Verne, Marcel Aymé, Violette Leduc, Emmanuelle Pagano, Emilie de Turckheim and Noémi Lefebvre, was published in June.

Gitanjali Patel graduated from Oxford University in Spanish and Portuguese and has been translating from these languages since 2010. She has worked as a translator and editor for UNICEF in Rio de Janeiro, interpreted for the Rio Film Festival and uses translation in her research projects, for example on the language of Rio de Janeiro’s favelas.
